Review: Since Forever Ago by Olivia Besse

2/5 Stars

This book was provided by the author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly, you have to take this book for what it is. Its not deep, thoughtful or life changing. Its an honest portrayal how how life can workout sometimes. If you like mature characters or headstrong female protagonists this book is not for you. The characters are all shallow, cliche, and insufferably stupid. But that's what made this book so great: the characters are real and relatable.  I was, in the beginning, struggling to keep an open mind with this book as I couldn't get over the fact that these characters were in their twenties and not 14 year old girls, but I pushed through it and ended up thoroughly enjoying that aspect of the book.  There's no bullshitting reality, no 'perfect' characters, just prime examples of human flaws. This book is fast paced, messy, and imperfectly perfect.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It is not what I would normally enjoy as I typically pick headstrong protagonists with great character development, but I did enjoy the book. I did't love the book, it was incredibly sexist in parts and contained a great deal of 'slut-shaming' which made me cringe A LOT. Many people are likening it to Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, and in my opinion, while both books are realistic portrayals of genuine flaws of characters, this book shys in comparison. I LOVED Beautiful Disaster.

There are a lot of negative reviews floating around for this book and I fell the need to be the voice of reason here. The book isn't terrible, but I can see where all the one star reviews are coming from. You should go into this book with some knowledge of the fact that the author intended these characters to be grating and superficial as she wished it to be a representation of real life 21 year olds, not the romanticized movie version.
