Sometimes the world just gets a bit too much. Whether you are just feeling a little run down, or if you are completely overwhelmed with whatever might be going on in your life, we all get days where we just need to take a step back from normal life and BE for a while.
For you that might be a half hour spent singing along to angry music, or a few hours watching a particular film that always restores your faith in the world, or depending on how you feel, it might be taking a few days off from everything causing these feeling to just focus on yourself. With experience we all come to learn what works best for us when we need a little me time.
For me personally, when I have a day where my anxiety hits the roof and I feel rather defeated, I cant plan how long its going to take to get back to a somewhat 'normal' state of mind: sometimes it can be a day, other times it can be weeks. But each time I get overwhelmed I take a full day off where possible, and have some time to myself.
Now I'm not just saying I drop everything whenever I feel a bit shit. If this happens on a school day I take a while to weigh out all the pro's and con's of taking a day off. Do I have an important class that I will fall behind in if I miss it? Is it something else other than school that's causing these feelings? Am I just avoiding a certain school-related situation? If the answer is no then I will generally not go to school that day. Usually I will try to get some school work done at some point during that day, but I will take the majority of the time to de-stress.
Occasionally, situations will arise that despite having an important class that day ect, I will decide that its not within my best interests to go to school. DON'T DO MORE DAMAGE TO YOUR MENTAL STATE. When school is a source of stress, it can become a real issue because obviously you have to go to school, and often times the weekends aren’t enough downtime. School is hard. It’s difficult to get up at six in the morning five days a week and spend seven hours at school and then come home to a huge stack of homework that you really don’t have the time or energy to do. It’s okay to give yourself a break sometimes.
I generally refer to these days as mental health days. Days where I just need to relax my mind and take some time away from the world. The idea of mental health days get a lot of stick though. Some people just see them as an excuse to get a day off school and lay around all day (*AHEM* parents), and other people will say that you 'cant solve all your psychological problems in a day.' Its true. But in a day you can get a bit of peace and refresh your mind.
I would, however, advise you to get any homework, chores or stressful activities all out of the way and completed before hand as possible so you have nothing at all to worry about. Just go with the flow. Just for one blissful day, you have no-one to please but yourself.
If you are in need of a few ideas for zero-stress activities here are a few to try out:
* Bed. Stay in bed. All day (apart from the necessary food gathering missions). Preferably with an animal of your choice. Watch movies. Read. Or just sleep. Fuck what everyone else says. Stay in bed.
* Play the Sims. Control someone else's life for a bit. Get out of your own head.
* Take a bath. With tea. And read a book. Use a bath bomb. Whack in a load of bubbles. Light a few pretty candles.
* Binge watch a tv show. A whole series. All off the series'. Whatever tickles your pickle.
* Eat food. As much as you want (calories don't count on duvet days). Have popcorn. Pizza. Soup. Chocolate. Or if you fancy, some fruit.
